Drillworks News
July 2010.
As it is the 10th Anniversary I am beginning work on a book to record in writing and images the development of the Art from the beginning.
Just completing a small portrait commission which has been a good challenge in delicate drillwork, I have used a 0.95mm drill to capture the detail.
A work depicting Cedars of Lebanon, 2.5m x 1.9m in size, finished in midnight blue lacquer has been installed in the new Le Gray Hotel in downtown Beirut. I am hoping to have some images soon to put on the website.

Drillworks were recently featured in the exclusive 'Quintessentially Living Volume 1' including some great scenes of London I made a while ago.
www.quintessentially.com are a Luxury lifestyle and concierge service. A panel I drilled of St. Pauls Catherderal is displayed in their office in Soho.
Celebration! This year is the 10th Anniversary of Drillworks.
Over the years I have been reminded again and again that one day a machine will be able to do this........but so far it is still just me as far as I know.
Anyone else doing this? If so, get in touch!
March 2010.
After years of discussions, preparation and work, the vast Drillwork wall in the Lobby of 39 Conduit Road in Hong Kong is just about complete. Over 100m2 of panelling has been drilled to depict a Treescape scene from our local environment here in Suffolk, it is backlit using a colour changing LED system and is very impressive.
There are images and more information available at : www.39conduitroad.com.hk
Meanwhile in more humble surroundings back home I continue working on trying to capture the movement and depth of the work on video (still photos never do) whilst planning an alternative web presence and of course, drilling a few holes...

Artist’s Statement
Drillworks are about the interplay of light and shade.
I have been developing the art of Drillwork since 2000. beginning by designing and drilling panels for table lamps, moving on to far more intricate and challenging work with illuminated wall panels and ostrich eggs.
The size of the drillbit, the spacing between each hole and the angle at which the hole is drilled all contribute to the desired effect of the final piece.
Smaller holes restrict the amount of light allowed to come through while angled drilling and variation of drill size combine to create the illusion of movement.
Drillwork is an experimental art, I am continually trying new ideas and techniques in an attempt to discover the boundaries and after several years of constant effort believe I have just about scratched the surface.
I feel that drillwork is just in its infancy, and in future I aim to improve my understanding of of what is possible to achieve using the technique, whilst at the same time pursue my passion creating works inspired by nature, numbers and all I observe and feel.
